Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain

Experiencing pain that is chronic in nature can be debilitating. It is often accompanied with emotional and psychological pain that enhances the sense of suffering that one is dealing with.

People dealing with chronic pain often feel like all they can think about is their pain, they avoid aspects of their life for fear that it will make things worse, and they often have difficulty sleeping, which exacerbates everything.

People struggling with chronic pain often say to themselves:

“This pain is killing me”

“I hate this pain”

“Why me?”

“This needs to go away”

“How do I get rid of this?”

Our approach to someone that is experiencing chronic pain is to teach mindfulness and compassion skills to deepen awareness and ability to explore pain and the suffering that often accompanies that pain  (i.e., thoughts, emotions, and sensations).

This helps to lower suffering by increasing the ability to examine pain in a non-judgmental way, and explore values to help find meaning and purpose in what they are doing, so that choices are made through values and not by the sensations of pain.
